Alipes (born in 1757) was a famous British Thoroughbred racehorse. She was amazing because she won every single one of her eight races! One of her big wins was the 1761 Great Subscription Purse. Alipes was first owned by Sir B. Graham. Later, she was bought by Richard Grosvenor.

About Alipes

Alipes was a filly, which means she was a young female horse. She was born in 1757 and had a beautiful brown or bay coat. William Swinburn was the person who bred her.

Her father was a horse named Regulus. He was also a champion and won all his races. Regulus was even named the best father horse in Great Britain eight times! Alipes' mother was a mare named Lusty.

Alipes' Racing Career

Alipes started her racing career when she was four years old. Her very first race was in March 1761 at Newmarket Racecourse. She won a big prize of 300 guineas, which was a lot of money back then!

The next month, she won the Jockey Club Plate. She beat many other horses, including Dupe and Dormouse filly. In June, she won the Subscription Purse at Newcastle.

One of her most important wins was the Great Subscription Purse at York Racecourse. She was the favorite to win, and she did! She beat five other horses in that race. Alipes finished her 1761 racing year by winning another big prize of 420 guineas at Richmond.

After these wins, Alipes was bought by Richard Grosvenor. She continued her winning streak. In 1762, she won the King's Plate at Hambleton. She also won a race in Lincoln that same year.

Alipes' last race was in April 1763 at Newmarket. She won the King's Plate for Mares, beating Imogin and four other horses. After this race, she retired from racing. She had won all eight of her races, making her an undefeated champion!

Alipes' Life as a Mother

After retiring from racing, Alipes became a broodmare at Grosvenor's horse farm. This means she became a mother and had baby horses, called foals. She had six foals in total.

Here are some of her foals:

  • Bandy filly – a bay female foal born in 1764.
  • Grasshopper – another bay female foal, born in 1765. Her father was Bandy.
  • Imogen – a bay female foal born in 1767. She won races at Newmarket and Lichfield in 1771. Imogen also became a mother and had eight foals herself!
  • Pangloss colt – a male foal born in 1768.
  • Chrysolite colt – a male foal born in 1770.
  • Squirrel colt – a male foal born in 1773. His father was a horse named Squirrel.
