About Alisha Searcy
Early Life and Education
Alisha Morgan went to Spelman College. There, she studied sociology, which is about how people live in groups, and drama. Later, she also earned a master's degree from Kennesaw State University.
Her Work in Government
Alisha Morgan was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives when she was only 23 years old. This is a part of the state government where elected officials work together to create and vote on laws for Georgia. During her time there, she worked on several important groups called committees. These committees focused on different topics like:
- Money for the state (Appropriations Committee)
- Schools and learning (Education Committee)
- How the government works (Governmental Affairs Committee)
- Health and helping people (Health & Human Services Committee)
- Laws for young people (Juvenile Justice Committee)
Supporting Schools and Students
Alisha Morgan strongly supported charter schools. These are public schools that have more freedom to try new teaching methods. She also wanted to change the Georgia Constitution, which is like the main rulebook for the state. Her idea was to create a special group to review applications for new charter schools, especially if a local school board said no.
She also supported a "trigger option." This idea would let parents in a local area make changes to schools that were not doing well. It could even allow them to replace the school's leaders.
Protecting Voting Rights
Alisha Morgan supported a part of the Voting Rights Act. This law was created to help protect the right to vote for all people, especially minority groups. She believed it was important to make sure no one was unfairly stopped from voting. Later, a court case called Shelby County v. Holder changed some parts of this law. Alisha Morgan also did not support "Stand-your-ground" laws, which are laws about using force for self-defense.
Beyond Politics
In 2009, Alisha Morgan started her own business called Morganics. This company helps people learn how to speak well in public and how to be good leaders. She also wrote a book called "No Apologies: Powerful Lessons in Life, Love & Politics."
Running for State School Superintendent
In 2014, Alisha Morgan ran for the position of State School Superintendent for Georgia. This person is in charge of all the public schools in the state. She ran against another candidate named Valarie Wilson in the Democratic primary election. Valarie Wilson won that election and then ran against the Republican candidate, Richard Woods.
