Alison Sealy-Smith grew up in Toronto, Canada, after moving from Barbados. She went to Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada. There, she studied psychology, which is the study of the mind and how people behave. She was able to go to university because she received a scholarship.

Alison Sealy-Smith is a very important person in Canadian theater. She helped start a theater company called Obsidian Theatre. This company focuses on plays and stories about African-Canadian experiences.
She has won awards for her acting. In 1997, she won a Dora Mavor Moore Award for her amazing performance in a play called Harlem Duet. She won another Dora Mavor Moore Award in 2009 for her role as Lena in the play A Raisin In The Sun. These awards celebrate great achievements in Canadian theater.
