The Church's Story

All Saints’ Church was built to serve the new homes in the Shard End area. It was named after an older church in Small Heath. That church was sadly destroyed by bombs during the Second World War.

The money to build the new church came from the War Damage Commission. This group helped rebuild places damaged during the war. Construction started in 1954. The church was built by C Bryant and Son Ltd. A local architect named Frank J. Osborne designed it. He also designed many other buildings in Birmingham.

The church was officially opened on November 1, 1955. This ceremony was led by Leonard Wilson, who was the Bishop of Birmingham at the time.

Community Life and Special Visits

A community hall was added to the church soon after it opened. This hall was finished after Queen Elizabeth II visited the area in 1955. In 1966, a bell was placed in the church tower. It was made by a famous company called John Taylor & Co.

A Special Building

In April 2022, All Saints’ Church received its Grade II listed status. This happened as part of the Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II celebrations. This listing recognized the church's simple design. It also noted the high-quality work that went into building it.

The church features beautiful sculptures by William Bloye. One important sculpture is a statue of Christ. It is placed above the main entrance. All Saints’ Church was also the first church built in Birmingham after the Second World War. The Queen's visit in 1955 showed how important this new church was.
