Alla Sheffer is a Canadian scientist who works with computers. She is a researcher in computer graphics, which is about making pictures and animations with computers. She also studies geometric modeling, which is how computers create and change 3D shapes.
Dr. Sheffer is known for her work on "mesh parameterization." This is a way to flatten 3D shapes onto a 2D surface without stretching them too much. Think of peeling an orange and trying to make the peel lie flat without tearing it. She is currently a professor of computer science at the University of British Columbia in Canada.
Becoming a Computer Scientist
Alla Sheffer went to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. She earned her first degree in mathematics and computer science in 1991. Later, she got her master's degree in computer science in 1995.
She continued her studies and earned her Ph.D. (a very advanced degree) in computer science in 1999. Her main project for her Ph.D. was about how computers can create and work with shapes. Her professor, Michel Bercovier, helped guide her research.
Early Career Steps
After finishing her Ph.D., Dr. Sheffer did more research at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in the United States. This is called postdoctoral research.
In 2001, she became a professor at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Israel. Two years later, in 2003, she moved to Canada. She joined the University of British Columbia as a professor. By 2013, she became a full professor there.
Awards and Recognition
Alla Sheffer has received many important awards for her work. These awards show how much her research has helped the field of computer graphics.
Major Achievements
In 2018, the Canadian Human–Computer Communications Society gave her an Achievement Award. They recognized her for her many important contributions to computer graphics research.
In 2020, Dr. Sheffer was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. This is a very high honor for Canadian scientists. That same year, she also became a member of the ACM SIGGRAPH Academy. SIGGRAPH is a big group for people who work in computer graphics.
In 2021, she was elected as a Fellow of IEEE. IEEE is a large organization for engineers and scientists. Also in 2021, she was named an ACM Fellow. This award was for her work on how computers process shapes and how we see them.
