The Allan Memorial Institute (AMI), also known as "The Allan", is a building in Montreal, Quebec. It used to be a special hospital and research center for mental health.

It is located on the side of Mount Royal mountain. It's part of the McGill University campus in downtown Montreal. The building is named after Sir Hugh Allan. It used to be his big house called Ravenscrag.

What is the Allan Memorial Institute?

The Allan Memorial Institute first opened in 1940. It was a place where people could get help for mental health issues. Doctors also did research there to learn more about the human mind.

Its Location and History

The Institute is in a beautiful spot in Montreal. It sits on the slope of Mount Royal. This area was once known as the Golden Square Mile. It was where many wealthy families lived. The building itself is a historic mansion. It was once the home of Sir Hugh Allan, a famous businessman.

From Hospital to Research Center

The Allan Memorial Institute stopped being a full-time hospital in 2015. Its emergency room closed then. A new, modern mental health department opened at the Montreal General Hospital.

Today, the Allan Memorial Institute still helps people. It offers outpatient services. This means people visit for appointments but do not stay overnight. It is part of the McGill University Health Centre.

A Look at Project MKUltra

The Institute is a respected place today. However, it also has a controversial past. Between 1957 and 1964, a research project called Project MKUltra took place there. This project was led by the Institute's first director, Donald Ewen Cameron.

Project MKUltra was a research program. It explored how the human mind works. The project aimed to understand how to influence thoughts and behavior. This research was very controversial. It raised many questions about ethics and how people should be treated in studies.
