Allen Curtis Jenkins (born Alfred McGonegal; April 9, 1900 – July 20, 1974) was an American actor, voice actor, and singer. He worked on stage, in movies, and on television. Many people who grew up in the 1960s might know him best as the voice of Officer Charlie Dibble in the famous Hanna-Barbera TV cartoon series Top Cat (1961–62).
About Allen Jenkins
Allen Jenkins was born on Staten Island, New York, on April 9, 1900. He started his acting career on stage in 1922.
In 1932, Jenkins signed a special agreement with Warner Bros., a big movie studio. He quickly became known for playing characters who were often a bit grumpy but also very funny and quick-witted. He was good at acting in comedies, serious dramas, and even musicals because he was a skilled dancer.
Jenkins was part of a group of Irish-American actors and friends in Hollywood. This group included famous stars like Spencer Tracy, James Cagney, Pat O'Brien, and Frank McHugh. Even though he worked a lot for Warner Bros., his agreement allowed him to act in movies for other studios too. For example, he appeared in Whirlpool and Dead End.
After his agreement with Warner Bros. ended, Jenkins worked independently for the rest of his career. After World War II, when fewer big movies were made, he found work at smaller studios. He also started acting in the new world of television.
His Acting Roles
Allen Jenkins appeared in many popular movies and TV shows. In 1959, he played Harry, an elevator operator, in the comedy movie Pillow Talk.
On television, he was a regular on the show Hey, Jeannie! (1956–57). He also often played a character named Muggsy on The Red Skelton Show for many years. Jenkins was a guest star on many other TV programs, including The Man from U.N.C.L.E., I Love Lucy, and Bewitched. He even had a small role in the big comedy movie It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963).
His very last acting role was in a movie called The Front Page (1974). This movie was released after he passed away.
His Final Years
Allen Jenkins died on July 20, 1974, when he was 74 years old. He passed away from lung cancer.
