History of Allenby

Ancient Village Life

Long, long ago, where Allenby Public School stands today, there was a village. This village was home to the Wyandot people, also known as the Huron. They were an Iroquoian-speaking group of First Nations people.

The village was active around the 1450s. It was built near a natural spring, which provided fresh water. The Wyandot people lived in this area for many years.

Moving On

By the 1600s, the Wyandot people moved away from the Toronto area. They settled closer to Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. The old village site in Allenby is now called the "Jackes Site."

You can find a special plaque outside Allenby Public School. This plaque marks the spot where the ancient village once stood. It helps us remember the history of the land.

Modern Allenby Begins

The Allenby neighbourhood we know today started to grow in the 1920s. It was built around the new Allenby Junior Public School. The school was named after a famous British soldier.

His name was Edmund Allenby, 1st Viscount Allenby. He was a field marshal, which is a very high rank in the army. He lived from 1861 to 1936.
