Village History

The village of Allerton was named after Samuel W. Allerton. He was a very rich landowner in Vermilion County. Samuel Allerton made his money from farming and selling animals. He also helped start the First National Bank of Chicago and the Chicago Union Stockyards.

In 1880, Samuel Allerton bought a large piece of land, about 3,800 acres, in the southwest part of the county. This land was once called Twin Grove Farm. When the C&EI railroad decided to build tracks through the area, Samuel Allerton let them use his land. He then helped set up a place to store grain and planned out the village. He also gave land for a park, started a bank, and helped pay for a new brick school in 1894. He even made sure the village had a water system. Even though he did all this for Allerton, Samuel Allerton continued to live in Chicago.

Samuel Allerton also owned a lot of land in other places. For example, he had 12,000 acres in Piatt County. Part of this land later became the famous Robert Allerton Park, which is named after his son, Robert. Robert Allerton helped manage his father's farms in Illinois. Overall, Samuel Allerton owned a huge amount of land – about 78,000 acres across four different states in the Midwest!
