Alliford Bay is a pretty bay and was once a small town. It is located on Moresby Island in Haida Gwaii. This is a group of islands off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. Alliford Bay is about 15 kilometers west of a place called Sandspit. Today, it is an important stop for BC Ferries and planes that land on water, called seaplanes.
Alliford Bay's Role in World War II
During World War II, Alliford Bay was home to an important air force base. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) used this base. They flew special planes called Catalina flying boats from here. These planes could land and take off from the water.
From 1941 to 1943, the RCAF base helped the Royal Canadian Navy. It played a secret role in listening to enemy radio messages. This helped Canada understand what the Japanese forces were doing. The base was closed down in 1945 after the war ended.
Alliford Bay Today
Today, most of the old air force base is gone. What remains is a red cedar mill and a dry land sort. A dry land sort is a place where logs are sorted on land. Several homes are still lived in at Alliford Bay. It continues to be a key transportation hub for ferries and seaplanes.
