The Story of Allinson Bread
How It Started
The Allinson brand began with a doctor named Thomas Allinson. He was born in Manchester, England, in 1858. Dr. Allinson studied medicine in Edinburgh and became a doctor in 1879.
He believed that eating healthy food was very important. In 1889, he wrote a book called "The Advantages of Wholemeal Bread." This book shared his ideas about healthy eating.
Making Wholemeal Flour
In 1892, Dr. Allinson started his own company in Bethnal Green, London. He called it Dr. Allinson's Natural Food Company. This company was special because it was one of the first to make wholemeal flour.
Wholemeal flour uses the entire grain of wheat, which makes it very nutritious. Dr. Allinson's motto was Health without Medicine. He thought that good food could help people stay healthy.
Growing the Company
Dr. Allinson was a strong supporter of eating vegetables and whole grains. His company grew, and they bought two more mills. These mills were located in Castleford and Newport in Wales.
Later, in 1935, the Allinson company joined with six other bakeries. They formed a larger group called Allied Bakeries. This group was started by Willard Garfield Weston.
Famous Adverts
Allinson bread has been advertised on TV. One famous advert featured actor Brian Glover. He used a Yorkshire accent and said the bread was Bread wi' Nowt Taken Out. This meant the bread was natural and nothing good was removed from it.

Today, the Allinson bread brand is based in Maidenhead, Berkshire. This is the same location as its owner, Associated British Foods. The company focuses on making only wholemeal bread.

The Allinson brand is quite valuable, worth around £20 million. They sell two main types of wholemeal bread. These are simply called Wholemeal and Hi-Bran.

Allinson Flour is a separate part of the business. It makes flour and yeast for baking. This part of the company is owned by The Silver Spoon Company. It is based in Peterborough.
