Who Was Dr. Allinson?

Dr. Thomas Allinson was born in Manchester in 1858. He trained to be a medical doctor in Edinburgh. In 1892, he started his own company. It was called "Dr Allinson's Natural Food Company." This company was in Bethnal Green, London. It was the first company to make wholemeal flour. Dr. Allinson's main idea was "Health without Medicine." He strongly believed in healthy eating. He especially promoted eating whole grain bread. Some people thought he was a bit unusual. This was because of his ideas about vegetarianism and natural health.

Growing the Company

Over time, Allinson bought two more mills. These were in Castleford and Newport in Wales. In 1935, the company joined with six other bakeries. They formed a larger group called Allied Bakeries. This group was started by Willard Garfield Weston. Allinson bread has also been advertised on TV. A famous voice actor, Brian Glover, used to say, "Bread wi' Nowt Taken Out." This slogan meant the bread was pure and natural.

Allinson Bread

The company that makes Allinson bread is based in Maidenhead in Berkshire. This is the same location as its parent company, Associated British Foods. Allinson bread only makes wholemeal bread. The brand is quite valuable, worth around £20 million. They sell two main types of bread. These are called Wholemeal and Hi-Bran.

Allinson Flour

Allinson Flour is a separate company. It makes flour and yeast. This company is owned by The Silver Spoon Company. It is based in Peterborough.
