Allman Bay is a special part of the Nares Strait in Canada's far north. It's like a large "arm" of water that reaches into the land. You can find it in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, which is a huge territory in northern Canada. This bay is located on the eastern side of Ellesmere Island, one of the largest islands in the world. It forms the southern edge of a land area called the Darling Peninsula. Another bay, Dobbin Bay, is about 28 kilometers (17 miles) to the northeast.

Exploring Allman Bay

Allman Bay is a remote place, but it has been visited by brave explorers over the years. These journeys helped people learn more about the Arctic's geography and its challenging conditions.

Admiral Nares's Journey

One of the first well-known explorers to visit Allman Bay was Admiral Sir George Nares. He was a British naval officer who led an important Arctic expedition. Admiral Nares explored the bay during his voyage between 1875 and 1876. His expedition aimed to reach the North Pole and map the unknown areas of the Arctic.

Robert Peary's Icy Stay

Years later, another famous explorer, Robert Peary, also visited Allman Bay. Peary was an American explorer known for his Arctic expeditions. His ship became stuck in the ice in Allman Bay for a long time. This happened from August 18, 1898, until August 2, 1899. Imagine being stuck in a frozen bay for almost a whole year! This shows how difficult and unpredictable travel in the Arctic can be, even for experienced explorers. Being "ice-bound" means the ship was completely surrounded and trapped by thick ice, unable to move.
