Allvar Gullstrand (born June 5, 1862 – died July 28, 1930) was a Swedish eye doctor and expert in optics. He made big discoveries about how the human eye works and how light travels through it.

Early Life and Education

Allvar Gullstrand was born in Landskrona, Sweden. He grew up to become a professor at the University of Uppsala. From 1894 to 1927, he taught about eye care and optics. Optics is the study of how light behaves.

Discoveries About the Eye

Gullstrand used advanced math to study how light bends inside the eye. This bending of light helps us see clear images. He created a detailed mathematical model of the human eye. This model helped scientists understand vision much better.

Nobel Prize Winner

In 1911, Allvar Gullstrand won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He received this important award for his amazing work on the eye's optics. His research helped many people with vision problems.

Improving Eye Tools

Gullstrand also did important research on astigmatism. This is a common eye problem that blurs vision. He also made better tools for eye doctors. He improved the ophthalmoscope, which is a tool used to look inside the eye. He also designed better corrective lenses. These lenses are used after a person has a cataract removed. A cataract makes the eye's lens cloudy.

His Role in Science

In 1905, Gullstrand became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. This is a group of top scientists in Sweden. He also served on the committee that chose Nobel Prize winners for physics.

Views on Albert Einstein

While on the committee, Gullstrand had strong opinions about Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. He believed that Einstein's work needed more proof. He felt it was not yet useful enough for people. Because of this, he voted against Einstein receiving a Nobel Prize for his relativity theory.

Personal Life

Allvar Gullstrand married Signe Breitholtz in 1885. She was born in 1862 and passed away in 1946.

Later Years

Allvar Gullstrand died in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1930. He was buried in a place called Norra begravningsplatsen. His work continues to be important in the field of eye care and optics.
