Alma Adamkienė (born Alma Nutautaitė; 10 February 1927 – 21 May 2023) was a very important woman in Lithuania. She was a philologist, which means she studied languages and literature. She was also a kind person who helped many people, known as a philanthropist. Alma Adamkienė was the wife of Valdas Adamkus, who was the president of Lithuania. She served as the First Lady of Lithuania during his two times in office. These were from 1998 to 2003 and again from 2004 to 2009. She also held citizenship in the United States of America.

Her Early Life

Alma Adamkienė was born in a city called Šiauliai in Lithuania. This was on 10 February 1927. Her father, Stasys Nutautas, was a businessman. Her mother, Ona Soblytė-Nutautienė, helped him with his work. In 1944, the Soviet Army came back to Lithuania. Because of this, Alma and her family had to leave their home and move to the West. She finished her high school studies in Germany. Later, she went to Erlangen University in Nuremberg to study philology.

Life in the United States

Alma Nutautaitė moved to the United States of America in 1949. Her first job was working in a laboratory at a steel factory. After that, she worked for an insurance company. She also spent time helping with activities for Lithuanians who had moved away from their home country. In 1951, Alma Nutautaitė married Valdas Adamkus. She then took his last name, becoming Alma Adamkus in the United States.

As First Lady

In 1997, there was a presidential election in Lithuania. Valdas Adamkus ran for president and won. When he became president, Alma Adamkienė took on an important role. As First Lady, she became very involved in helping people in Lithuania. She focused especially on programs that supported children. In 1999, she started her own organization. It was called the Alma Adamkienė Charity and Support Fund. This fund helped many people in need.

Personal Life and Passing

Alma Adamkienė did not have any children. She passed away in Vilnius, Lithuania, on 21 May 2023. She was 96 years old.
