Almassora (pronounced alma-SO-ra) is a town and municipality located in the Valencian Community, a region in Spain. It's part of an area called Plana Alta.
What is Almassora Like?
Almassora is a town with different parts. These include the main town area, a beach area called La Platja, and farming areas like L'Horta and El Secà. There's also an industrial park where businesses are located.
History of Almassora
People have lived in the area around Almassora for a very long time. We know this because ancient Iberian remains have been found there. The town as we know it today was first settled by Muslims. Some say its name comes from a famous Muslim leader named Al-Mansur.
In 1234, a king named James I of Aragon took control of the town from the Muslims, who were sometimes called Saracens. He gave the town its own special rules, called a municipal charter, in 1237. This was an important step for the town to govern itself.
Later, in 1616, a channel was built. This channel helped bring water from the Millars River to the town. This was very useful for farming and daily life. In 1647, a special chapel called the Ermita de Santa Quiteria was built.
