Almegíjar is found high up in the mountains. It sits over 800 meters (about 2,600 feet) above sea level. The village is on the southern slopes of the Sierra Morena. This mountain range is connected to Mulhacen, which is the tallest mountain in Spain.
History of Almegíjar
Almegíjar has a history that includes events from the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). During this time, the village was close to the front lines of the conflict. You can still see the remains of old trenches up in the mountains. These trenches show how far one side of the conflict advanced into the Las Alpujarras region.
