Almena is a small village located in Barron County, which is part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It's a friendly place where about 705 people live, according to the 2020 census.
History of Almena
Almena got its name in a unique way! A post office started operating here in 1888. The village was named after Albert and Wilhelmina, who were early settlers in the area.
The village was officially planned out in 1891. Before it was called Almena, people wanted to name the post office "Lightning City." This name came from a nearby stream called Lightning Creek. However, the government didn't approve the name "Lightning City," so they chose Almena instead.
Where is Almena Located?
Almena is found right on the edge between two areas: the Town of Almena and the Town of Clinton. It's about 82 miles (132 kilometers) northeast of a big city called Minneapolis.
The village covers a total area of about 1.14 square miles (2.95 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no large bodies of water inside the village limits.
You can reach Almena by traveling along U.S. Highway 8 and County Road P. These roads help connect Almena to other towns and cities.
