Where is Almena Located?
The Town of Almena is on the western side of Barron County. Its western border touches Polk County. The Village of Almena is found on the eastern edge of the town. Another village, Turtle Lake, is in the southwest part of the town.
Main Roads in Almena
Two important roads cross through the Town of Almena:
- U.S. Route 8 goes across the town from east to west. It passes through both the Village of Almena and the Village of Turtle Lake. This road is about 10 miles (16 km) east to Barron. It is also about 26 miles (42 km) west to St. Croix Falls.
- U.S. Route 63 crosses the town diagonally. It starts from Turtle Lake in the southwest and goes towards the northern border. This highway leads about 7 miles (11 km) northeast to Cumberland. It also goes about 13 miles (21 km) southwest to Clear Lake.
Lakes and Waterways
The Town of Almena covers a total area of about 32.3 square miles (83.8 km2). Most of this area, about 30.5 square miles (78.9 km2), is land. The rest, about 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2), is water. The biggest lakes in the town are Upper and Lower Turtle Lakes. Other lakes include Echo Lake and the eastern part of Horseshoe Lake.

Based on a census from 2000, there were 910 people living in the Town of Almena. These people lived in 355 households, and 301 of these were families. Most people living in the town were White (99.78%). A very small number were Native American or from two or more racial backgrounds.
