History of Almendral
Extremadura, the region where Almendral is located, has a very long history. Many different groups of people lived here over thousands of years. These included the Iberians, Celts, Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, and Arabs. They all left their mark on the land and its people.
Ancient Times
Evidence shows that people lived in the Almendral area a very long time ago. Scientists believe that early tribes, possibly from the Iberian people, settled here. This is because many ancient burial sites, called megalithic tombs, have been found between Almendral and a nearby town called Barcarrota. These tombs are like very old stone monuments.
The area was also important during the Roman period. Later, the Visigoths, who ruled after the Romans, may have made Almendral a more important place. Old Visigothic items have been found near a site called the San Matías hermitage. Some of these ancient pieces are now in the Archaeological Museum of Badajoz.
Founding of the Modern Town
The Almendral we know today was actually founded by the Arabs. It was built about two kilometers away from the older settlement near the San Matías church. The original settlement might have been destroyed by Portuguese forces. This happened during conflicts when they entered Extremadura after a big battle called Aljubarrota.
In 1333, a king named Alfonso XI gave the town of Almendral to Enrique Enríquez "el Mozo." Enrique was an important noble and a great-grandson of King Fernando III. This gift included the town's lands and income.
Later Years
Almendral was once a village connected to the city of Badajoz. It was also part of the "Manor of Feria" during the time of Gome Suárez de Figueroa. In the 1600s, Almendral, like other towns near the border, faced challenges. It was affected by fights between Spain and Portugal.
Towards the end of the Francoist period in Spain, Almendral became an official municipality. Since 1834, it has been part of the Olivenza judicial district. In 1842, a count showed that Almendral had 480 homes and 1,670 residents.
