A Look at Almodóvar del Campo's History

Ancient Times: The City of Sisapo

Long ago, there was an ancient city called Sisapo near where Almodóvar del Campo is today. Archaeologists have found its remains at a place called La Bienvenida.

People believe Sisapo was founded a very long time ago, between the late 8th and early 7th centuries BC. It was a very important city during the Roman Empire.

Sisapo became rich because of its mines. They mined a special rock called cinnabar, which is used to get mercury. However, the mining activity slowed down around the 2nd or 3rd century AD.

How Almodóvar Got Its Name

The name Almodóvar comes from an Arabic word, al-mudawwar. This word means 'the round one'.

In the middle of the 12th century, there was a big battle in the plains of Almodóvar. Forces led by Munio Alfonso fought against the Saracen forces of Texufin.

The Middle Ages and Beyond

Almodóvar del Campo was once part of the lands controlled by the Order of Calatrava. This was a powerful group of knights. Almodóvar became a very important center for them.

The town's economy grew a lot during the Middle Ages. This was thanks to its large pastures, which were good for raising animals. Almodóvar started holding two big fairs around 1260. These fairs later became a weekly open market in 1376.

During the late Middle Ages, different groups of people lived in Almodóvar. These included people who had converted to Christianity, and people from other countries like Genoa, Portugal, Flanders, and France.

In the 20th century, the mining of oil shale in Almodóvar helped the nearby town of Puertollano to grow its industries.
