María de la Almudena de Arteaga y del Alcázar, the 20th Duchess of the Infantado, is a Spanish writer. She was born in Madrid on June 25, 1967. She is well-known for writing historical novels. She also holds the noble title of Grandee in Spain.

About Almudena de Arteaga

Almudena de Arteaga was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1967. She still lives there with her husband and two daughters. She studied law at the Complutense University of Madrid. She also earned a special diploma in Genealogy, Heraldry, and Nobility.

Her Career as a Writer

For six years, Almudena worked as a lawyer. She focused on civil and labor law. She also helped research and write historical books. In 1997, she published her first novel, La Princesa de Éboli. This book was very successful. Because of its popularity, she decided to stop practicing law. She then became a full-time writer. Since then, she has written more than twenty books.

Critics see her as one of the best historical novel writers today. Her books have been on bestseller lists for months. Many of her books have been reprinted and translated into other languages. In 2004, she won the Alfonso X El Sabio Historical Novel Award. She received it for her book María de Molina. Tres coronas medievales. In 2012, she won the Azorín Prize for Best Novel. This award was for her book Capricho, a historical mystery set in 19th-century Madrid.

Today, Almudena de Arteaga continues to write new books. She also gives talks at literary and historical events. She writes articles for national newspapers and magazines. In September 2024, she won a court case. This case was about getting back control of a park in Manzanares el Real, Spain. Her grandfather had given the park to the town in 1975. He did this to gain support from local residents.

The House of the Infantado

A law passed in 2006 changed how noble titles are passed down in Spain. This law made it so that men and women have equal rights to inherit titles. Because of this new rule, Almudena became the main heir to the House of the Infantado. She was the first-born child. Before this law, her brother Íñigo would have inherited the title. He was the first-born son. Íñigo, the 20th Marquis of Tavara, passed away in 2012.

On November 17, 2018, her right to the Duchy of the Infantado was officially announced. This was published in the Official State Gazette. She also inherited five other noble titles at that time.
