Alfonso Manrique de Lara y Solís (born in Segura de León, Badajoz, in 1476 – died in Seville, Spain, in 1538) was an important Spanish church leader. He held many high positions in the Roman Catholic Church during his life.

Alfonso Manrique's Life

Alfonso Manrique was born in Segura de León, a town in Badajoz, Spain, in 1476. His father was Rodrigo Manrique de Lara, a well-known figure of his time. Alfonso grew up to become a very influential person in the church.

His Journey in the Church

Alfonso began his career as a bishop. He was first the Bishop of Badajoz from 1499 until before 1516. After that, he became the Bishop of Córdoba in 1516, a role he held until 1523.

In August 1523, Alfonso Manrique became the Archbishop of Seville. This was a very important position in the church in Spain. In the same year, he was also appointed as the Inquisitor General. This meant he was a chief official responsible for religious matters and ensuring people followed church rules.

A few years later, around 1531, he was made a cardinal-priest in Rome. This is one of the highest ranks in the Catholic Church, just below the Pope. He was first given the title for the church of Santi Apostoli, Rome, and then for San Callisto.

His Final Years

Alfonso Manrique de Lara y Solís passed away on September 28, 1538, in Seville.
