Alphabet pasta is a special type of pasta shaped like letters of the alphabet. It's also known as alfabeto or alphabetti spaghetti, especially in the UK. This pasta is made by cutting or pressing dough into letter shapes.

You'll often find alphabet pasta in a warm bowl of alphabet soup. Sometimes, like with a product called Alphagetti, it comes with a tasty marinara or spaghetti sauce.

The Story of Alphabet Pasta

It's not completely clear who invented alphabet pasta or exactly when it first appeared. But we know it's been around for a long time!

Early Mentions

  • As early as 1877, shops in Paris were selling "small bits of macaroni" shaped like letters for soup.
  • Paris restaurants were also serving "delicious soups" with pasta cut into alphabet shapes.
  • In 1883, a cookbook from The Chicago Herald Cooking School included a recipe for soup that used small pasta like "alphabet pastes."
  • By January 1900, alphabet soup was on restaurant menus in New York City.
  • Even famous inventor Wilbur Wright ate alphabet soup in France in 1908!

"Alphabet Soup" as a Saying

The phrase "alphabet soup" can also mean a confusing mix of many acronyms or abbreviations. For example, if someone uses lots of short forms like "NASA," "FBI," and "UN" all at once, it might sound like "alphabet soup." It's interesting that this saying also appeared around 1883, at the same time the pasta was becoming known.

Popular Brands

Many companies make alphabet pasta, often marketing it as a fun and educational food for kids.

Campbell's Alphabet Soup

In America, one very well-known brand of alphabet soup is made by the Campbell's. This soup comes in a can and is popular with parents who like the idea of their children learning letters while they eat.

Heinz Alphabetti Spaghetti

The H. J. Heinz Company also sold a similar product called Alphabetti Spaghetti for 60 years. It was pasta letters in tomato sauce. They stopped selling it in 1990 but brought it back in 2005 because it was so popular!
