Alpine is a small, unincorporated community located in Columbia Township, Fayette County, Indiana. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.
A Look Back at Alpine's History
Alpine has a long history! The very first sawmill in Columbia Township was built right here in Alpine back in 1814. A sawmill is a place where logs are cut into lumber.
Later, around 1832, Alpine was officially planned out as a town. By 1885, it had grown to include a sawmill, a gristmill (which grinds grain into flour), and even a station for the Whitewater Valley Railroad.
A post office opened in Alpine in 1868. It served the community for many years until it closed down in 1966.
