The Alsodes valdiviensis is a special kind of frog that belongs to the Alsodidae family. It's found only in Chile, which means it's endemic there. This frog is known from just one place: Cerro Mirador, located in the Cordillera Pelada mountains in Valdivia Province. Its name, valdiviensis, comes from this province.

What Does It Look Like?

These frogs are medium-sized. Adult males are about 40 to 60 millimeters long, and females are a bit bigger, from 40 to 63 millimeters. This measurement is taken from their snout (nose) to their vent (bottom).

Their bodies are strong, with good-sized arms and legs. The frog's snout looks like it's cut off when you view it from above. They don't have a visible eardrum (tympanum). Their fingers are long with rounded tips and no webbing between them. The toes are long, thin, and have a fringe-like edge.

The top of their bodies and their legs are light brown with hints of gold. Their skin on the sides and back feels bumpy, like small grains. Their belly and throat are whitish. The iris (the colored part of their eye) is black with bronze patterns.

Where Does It Live and How Is It Protected?

The Alsodes valdiviensis frog lives in cool, damp forests in Chile. These forests have special trees like Nothofagus and Fitzroya. It also lives in bogs, which are wet, marshy areas. These places are usually found about 1,100 meters (about 3,600 feet) above sea level.

Adult male frogs have been found hiding under logs near the edge of the forest during spring and summer. When it's time to lay eggs and have babies, these frogs go to cold, fast-moving streams.

Right now, scientists don't know what the main threats to this frog are. It's also not known to live in any special protected areas, like national parks or reserves. This means its habitat might not be safe from changes in the future.
