Alt Àneu is a beautiful town and municipality located in the Pallars Sobirà county in Catalonia, a region in Spain. It's known for its stunning natural beauty and charming villages.
This area is actually the largest municipality in Catalonia when you look at its size! It covers about 1913.79 square kilometers. In 2022, around 441 people lived there. The town is right by the Noguera Pallaresa river, which is a big part of its landscape. You can get there easily by the C-13 road. This road connects Alt Àneu to Sort, which is the main town of the county. It also links to the Aran Valley by crossing the Port de la Bonaigua, a mountain pass that is 2072 meters high. The main office for the town, called the ajuntament (town hall), is in València d'Àneu.
Exploring Alt Àneu's Villages
The municipality of Alt Àneu is made up of nine smaller villages. Each village has its own unique charm and history. Here are the villages and their populations as of 2005:
- Alòs d'Isil (34 people)
- Àrreu (6 people)
- La Bonaigua (16 people)
- Borén (25 people), located on the left side of the Noguera Pallaresa river
- Isavarre (25 people)
- Isil (85 people), found in the upper part of the valley

- Sorpe (42 people)
- València d'Àneu (175 people), located on the right side of the Noguera Pallaresa river
Population Changes Over Time
The number of people living in Alt Àneu has changed quite a bit over the years. In 1900, there were 1146 residents. By 1970, the population had decreased to 480. However, in recent years, the population has started to grow again, reaching about 450 people by 2007. This shows how communities can grow and shrink over time.
