Pantano de Camarasa
Camarasa reservoir in the Noguera Pallaresa river

The Noguera Pallaresa is an important river in Catalonia, Spain. It gets its name from the Pallars region, which it flows through. This river is known for its beautiful scenery and exciting water sports!

Where the River Flows

The Noguera Pallaresa starts high up in the mountains, in a place called Era Font d'era Noguereta. This is in the area of Naut Aran (Aran Valley). The river begins at a height of about 2,000 meters (about 6,560 feet) above sea level. It starts very close to where another big river, the Garonne, begins.

But here's a cool fact: even though they start close, these two rivers go in totally different directions! The Garonne flows towards the Atlantic Ocean. The Noguera Pallaresa, however, flows towards the Segre River. It joins the Segre just before the Camarasa reservoir in the Noguera region. From there, its waters continue all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.

Along its path, the Noguera Pallaresa has several dams and large reservoirs. These are like big lakes created by the dams. Some of the biggest ones include:

Fun Water Sports

The Noguera Pallaresa is a super popular spot for exciting water sports like canoeing and rafting. Especially between the La Torassa reservoir and the Sant Antoni lake, the river is perfect for these activities.

During spring and summer, the river's water level changes a lot. At night, the river can become quite low because the dam is closed. But in the morning, the dam is opened! This releases a lot of water, and in just a few hours, the river becomes full and fast. It creates thrilling rapids, which are perfect for experienced rafters and canoeists. In the evening, the dam closes again, and the river calms down.
