Alta Plaza is a beautiful park located in San Francisco, California. It sits high up on the western side of a neighborhood called Pacific Heights. The park is managed by the city and you can reach it using different bus lines. It gets its name from a natural spring that was once nearby.

About Alta Plaza Park

Alta Plaza is a large park that covers four city blocks. It's located at the very top of Pacific Heights. From here, you can see amazing views of many parts of San Francisco. You can spot areas like the Marina and Cow Hollow, the Presidio (a former military post, now a national park), Fort Mason, and even Alcatraz (a famous island prison).

Where is Alta Plaza?

The park is surrounded by several streets. Jackson Street is on its north side, and Clay Street is on the south. On its east and west sides, you'll find Steiner and Scott Streets. The park actually stops Washington Street and Pierce Street from continuing straight through.

What Can You Do at Alta Plaza?

Alta Plaza has lots of fun things to do. In the middle of the park, you'll find three hard-surface tennis courts. There's also a small playground, perfect for younger kids. The northern part of the park has a big grassy area, great for picnics or playing games. On the southern side, there are lovely terraced lawns, which are like steps of grass.

Alta Plaza in Movies

The famous steps at Alta Plaza were featured in a movie! They appeared in the 1972 film What's Up, Doc?. In the movie, there's an exciting chase scene where several cars drive down these very steps. It's a memorable part of the film!
