Altafulla (Catalan pronunciation: [əltəˈfuʎə]) is a beautiful town in Catalonia, Spain. It is part of a region called Tarragonès. Altafulla is famous for its well-preserved old town. This old town has a wonderful castle called the Castle of Altafulla.
Near the beach, there's an old fishing village. It dates back to the 18th century. This area is known as "Baixamar" or "Les Botigues de Mar". It's a charming spot to explore.
There is another medieval castle nearby. It's called the Castle of the Marquises of Tamarit. This castle sits on a small hill overlooking the sea. Even though it's close, it's actually in the neighboring town of Tarragona. This castle is not open to the public.

Nature and History in Altafulla
Coastal Forests and Nature Preserves
Beyond the Tamarit castle, you'll find one of the last remaining forests along the sea in Catalonia. A part of this forest is a special nature preserve. It's protected under a plan for environmental and landscape protection. This area helps keep the natural beauty safe.
Ancient Roman Villa
Altafulla is also home to the ruins of the Roman villa of Els Munts. This ancient site is very important. It is even part of a larger UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it's recognized globally for its historical value. You can learn a lot about Roman times here.
Gaià River Estuary Wildlife Preserve
The Gaià River meets the sea in Altafulla. The last part of the river is a small nature preserve. It's called the Gaià River Estuary Wildlife Preserve. This area is a safe home for many songbirds.
Even though the river doesn't carry much water, it forms a tiny salt marsh. This marsh is separated from the sea by a sand bar. An organization called L'Hort de la Sínia manages this wildlife preserve. They also run an ecological agriculture and learning center.
