Altair Gomes de Figueiredo, known simply as Altair, was a famous Brazilian football player. He was born on January 22, 1938, and passed away on August 9, 2019. Altair played as a defender, which means his job was to stop the other team from scoring goals. He was a World Champion with the Brazilian national team at the 1962 World Cup.

Altair spent his entire playing career with one club, Fluminense, in Brazil. He played an amazing 551 games for them, scoring two goals. People called him "magro" (which means "slim" in Portuguese) because he was quite skinny. Even though he looked thin, he was a very strong player. He was known for his tough tackles and for being great at marking opposing players, especially in his famous matches against the legendary player Garrincha. Altair stopped playing football in 1971 when he was 33 years old.

Altair's journey in football began in his home country, Brazil. He joined Fluminense, a big club, and stayed there for his whole career. This is quite rare for a player to stay with one team for so long!

Playing for Fluminense

Altair was a key player for Fluminense for many years. He played in 551 matches, which shows how important and consistent he was for the team. His main role was to defend, making it hard for opponents to get past him. He was known for being a very reliable and strong defender, even with his slim build.

Playing for Brazil

Altair also played for the Brazilian national team. This is a huge honor for any player. He represented his country in 18 matches. His biggest achievement with Brazil was winning the 1962 FIFA World Cup in Chile. This made him a world champion, a title only a few players ever achieve. He was also part of the team for the 1966 FIFA World Cup, showing his continued importance to the national side.

Life After Playing

After retiring as a player in 1971, Altair continued to be involved with football. He even had a few short periods as an interim manager for his beloved club, Fluminense. This means he temporarily took charge of the team. He did this in 1992, 1996, 1997, and 1998. It shows his lasting connection and dedication to the club where he spent his entire playing career.
