In 2010, about 347 people lived in Altamahaw. Before 2002, Altamahaw was part of a larger area called Altamahaw-Ossipee. After 2002, Ossipee became its own town, and Altamahaw became a separate community.
History of Altamahaw
The Altamahaw Mill Office is an important old building in the community. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it's recognized as a place with special historical value that should be protected.

Altamahaw is located off State Route 87. It is about 7 miles (11 km) north of the city of Burlington.
