History of Altamonte Mall
Altamonte Mall first opened its doors on January 1, 1974. When it first opened, it had several big department stores. These included Robinson's of Florida, Burdines, and Sears. It also had a Jordan Marsh store.
Over the years, some of these original stores changed names or were replaced. For example, Robinson's of Florida became Maison Blanche. Then, Maison Blanche became Gayfers in 1992. Finally, Dillard's took over the Gayfers store in 1998. So, Dillard's is now in the spot where Robinson's used to be!
Another original store, Jordan Marsh, closed in 1991. A year later, JCPenney opened in that space.
Burdines, another original store, joined with Macy's in 2003. By 2005, it was simply known as Macy's.
In 2015, the Sears store at Altamonte Mall became part of a new company called Seritage Growth Properties. Later, on June 28, 2018, it was announced that the Sears store would close. The old Sears building is now being redeveloped for new stores and hotels.
