Altar River
Country Mexico

The Altar River is a river located in the northern mountains of Sonora, Mexico. It is an important natural feature in this desert region.

About the Altar River

The Altar River is known as a desert river. This means that its water flow changes with the seasons. Sometimes it can be dry, especially during hot, dry periods. It fills up with water when there is a lot of rain.

Where Does the Altar River Flow?

The Altar River starts near the border between Mexico and the United States. From there, it flows towards the southwest. It eventually joins another river called the Magdalena River. When these two rivers meet, they form a larger river known as the Concepción River.

How is the River Used?

The Altar River is important for the area. In 1943, a dam was built on the upper part of the river. This dam created the Cuauhtemoc Reservoir. A reservoir is like a large artificial lake. It stores water for different uses, such as drinking water or for farming. The Cuauhtemoc Reservoir is located just west of a town called Tubutama.

What is a River's Watershed?

The Altar River has a large area of land that drains into it. This area is called its watershed. Think of a watershed as a big bowl. All the rain and snow that falls within this "bowl" flows into the river. The Altar River's watershed covers about 2,801 square kilometers. This means a very large amount of land contributes water to the river.
