Towns and Villages
The Altenkirchen district is made up of many smaller towns and villages. These communities work together in groups called Verbandsgemeinden. This German word means a "collective municipality." It's a way for smaller places to share services and manage things together.
There are six main Verbandsgemeinden in the Altenkirchen district:
- Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld: This group includes the district capital, Altenkirchen, and many other villages.
- Betzdorf-Gebhardshain: Here you'll find the town of Betzdorf, which is an important center.
- Daaden-Herdorf: This group includes the towns of Daaden and Herdorf.
- Hamm: The town of Hamm (Sieg) is the main place in this group.
- Kirchen: This group includes the town of Kirchen and several other communities.
- Wissen: The town of Wissen is the center of this last group.
Each of these Verbandsgemeinden has a main town where its administrative offices are located. Some of these main towns are also officially recognized as "towns" (like cities, but smaller) within Germany.
