The frontier bow-fingered gecko, also known as the Baltistan gecko or Karakorum gecko, is a type of lizard. Its scientific name is Altiphylax stoliczkai. This gecko belongs to the Gekkonidae family, which includes all geckos. It is found only in South Asia, meaning it is endemic to that region.

What's in a Name?

The second part of the gecko's scientific name, stoliczkai, was chosen to honor a scientist. It is named after Ferdinand Stoliczka, a zoologist from Moravia.

Where Do They Live?

The frontier bow-fingered gecko lives in parts of Asia. You can find A. stoliczkai in India, specifically in areas like Kashmir, Karoo, Dras, and Ladakh. It also lives in western China.

Their Home Environment

These geckos prefer certain types of places to live. Their favorite natural homes are deserts, grasslands, and rocky areas. They can be found at very high altitudes, from about 2,300 meters (7,500 feet) up to 3,700 meters (12,100 feet) above sea level.

How They Reproduce

A. stoliczkai geckos are oviparous. This means that the females lay eggs, and the baby geckos hatch from these eggs.

Gecko Family Tree

Scientists study how different animals are related. Most experts now believe that another type of gecko, called Böhme's mountain gecko, is actually a subspecies of the frontier bow-fingered gecko. This means they are very closely related, like different types of the same animal.
