History of Alto Orinoco
The history of Alto Orinoco is linked to the exploration of the Orinoco and Río Negro rivers. After a Spanish group called the "Spanish Commission of Territorial Limits" finished their work in 1760, they suggested new ways to keep Spanish control over these lands.
Early Settlements and Control
Because of these suggestions, new commands were created. On March 17, 1767, a leader named Diez de la Fuente arrived in Esmeralda. He came with 60 Spaniards and about 3,000 native people led by caciques (chiefs) Wadena and Wasaha. This arrival helped restart and develop the settlement of Esmeralda.
Becoming a Municipality
The area officially became a territorial division, known as a municipality, on December 10, 1880. This decision was made by the government of Antonio Guzmán Blanco. This is how the Alto Orinoco Municipality became part of what is now the Amazonas State.
Population and People
The Alto Orinoco Municipality is home to many people. Understanding how many people live there and how they are spread out helps us learn about the area.
Population Numbers
In 2007, an estimate by the National Institute of Statistics of Venezuela showed that about 17,797 people lived in Alto Orinoco. This was an increase from 15,281 people in the year 2000. This means that about 12.5% of all the people in the Amazonas state live in this municipality.
Population Density
Population density tells us how many people live in a certain amount of space. In Alto Orinoco Municipality, the population density is about 0.3 people per square kilometer. This means that the area is very large, and people are spread out quite a bit, making it a less crowded place.
