Alto San Juan is a very tall mountain located right on the border between Argentina and Chile. It reaches an impressive height of 6,148 meters (about 20,171 feet). This mountain is part of the huge Central Andes mountain range.
A special part of Alto San Juan is protected within Argentina. It's called the Provincial Reserve for Multiple Use and Natural Recreation Manzano / Portillo de Piuquenes. The mountain's slopes also touch two important cities. On the Argentinean side, it's near Tunuyán in Mendoza. On the Chilean side, it's close to San José de Maipo in Cordillera.
First Climbers of Alto San Juan
The first people to successfully climb to the very top of Alto San Juan were Wolfgang Foerster, Jorge Koester, Ludwig Krahl, and Eberhard Meier. They were from Germany and reached the summit on November 2, 1944.
Later, in 2016, Suzanne Imber and Maximo Kausch made history. They were the first to climb the Argentinean side of the mountain.
