About Amadjuak Lake

Amadjuak Lake is very large, covering an area of 3,115 square kilometers (1,203 square miles). It sits at an elevation of 113 meters (371 feet) above sea level.

This area of Baffin Island was once covered by water. It rose out of the Foxe Basin about 4,500 years ago. That might sound like a long time, but in Earth's history, it's quite recent!

Amadjuak Lake is the second largest lake on Baffin Island. The only lake bigger than it on the island is Nettilling Lake. It is also the third-largest lake in all of Nunavut.

People and the Lake

For many years, Amadjuak Lake was an important meeting spot for the Inuit people. Inuit from different communities would gather here. These communities included Kimmirut, the Soper River Valley, Pangnirtung, Cape Dorset, and Frobisher Bay. It was a central place for them to connect.

Animals of the Lake

Amadjuak Lake is a very important place for animals, especially Barren-ground caribou. It serves as a summer home for a group of caribou known as the Southern Qikiqtaaluk herd.

The caribou use the lake area for several important reasons:

  • It is a place where they can find food in the summer.
  • It is a safe area for mother caribou to give birth to their calves.
  • It is also part of their migration route as they travel between different areas.
