Amadou Gon Coulibaly (born February 10, 1959 – died July 8, 2020) was an important politician from Ivory Coast, a country in West Africa. He served as the Prime Minister of Ivory Coast from January 2017 until his death in July 2020. The Prime Minister is like the head of the government, leading the country's daily operations. Before becoming Prime Minister, he worked closely with President Alassane Ouattara as his secretary general from 2011 to 2017.

Amadou Gon Coulibaly's Political Journey

Amadou Gon Coulibaly had a long and active career in politics.

Early Career and National Assembly

In the early 1990s, Amadou Gon Coulibaly worked as an adviser to the Prime Minister, who at that time was Alassane Ouattara. He was also a member of the National Assembly, which is like the parliament where laws are made. He served there from 1995 to 1999, and again from 2011 until he passed away. He also held the position of Mayor of Korhogo, a city in Ivory Coast.

Serving as Minister and Secretary General

From October 2002 to February 2010, Coulibaly was the Minister of Agriculture. This role meant he was in charge of everything related to farming and food production in the country. After Alassane Ouattara became president, Coulibaly became the secretary general of the presidency. This was a key role, helping the president manage important government activities. He held this position from 2011 until January 2017.

Becoming Prime Minister

President Ouattara chose Coulibaly to be the Prime Minister on January 10, 2017. The new government was announced the next day. It was similar to the previous government, with many ministers keeping their jobs. This new government was smaller, with 28 ministers instead of 35. In July 2017, Coulibaly was also given the extra job of managing the country's budget.

Leadership in the Ruling Party

In September 2017, Coulibaly was named the First Vice-President of the Rally of the Republicans (RDR). This was the ruling political party in Ivory Coast. When the government was changed in July 2018, Coulibaly was again asked to form a new government as Prime Minister.

Health and Passing Away

Amadou Gon Coulibaly had heart surgery in 2012. In May 2020, he traveled to France for a heart check-up and to rest. He returned to Ivory Coast on July 2. Sadly, on July 8, he became unwell during a government meeting. He was taken to a hospital but passed away at the age of 61.

Other Important Roles

From 2017, Coulibaly was also involved with important international organizations. He was a member of the board of governors for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group. The IMF helps countries with money problems, and the World Bank Group helps countries develop and reduce poverty.
