Discover Amaknak Island

Where is Amaknak Island?

Amaknak is a very small island, sometimes called an islet. It's part of the Fox Islands group, which is a section of the long Aleutian Islands chain in southwestern Alaska. You can find Amaknak Island inside Unalaska Bay. This bay is an inlet of the Bering Sea, located on the northeast side of a much larger island called Unalaska Island.

Amaknak and Unalaska islands are very close to each other. At their nearest point, they are only about 200 feet (61 meters) apart. This narrow channel connects Unalaska Bay to Iliuliuk Harbor. There's also a 500-foot (152-meter) bridge that joins the islands where Iliuliuk Harbor meets Captains Bay.

How Big is Amaknak Island?

Amaknak Island is quite small. It has a land area of only 3.3 square miles (8.5 square kilometers). To give you an idea, its neighbor, Unalaska Island, is much bigger. Unalaska Island covers about 1,051 square miles (2,722 square kilometers). So, Amaknak is tiny compared to it!

Who Lives on Amaknak Island?

Despite its small size, Amaknak Island is the most populated island in the entire Aleutian chain. In the year 2000, about 2,524 people lived there.

Amaknak Island is actually part of the City of Unalaska. However, most people who live on Amaknak Island think of themselves as residents of Dutch Harbor. Dutch Harbor is the part of the City of Unalaska that is located on Amaknak Island. The rest of Unalaska's residents (about 41%) live on the larger Unalaska Island.
