She also served as the Minister of State for Asia and the Middle East from September 2021 to September 2022. Before becoming an MP, Amanda Milling worked in market research.

Early Life and Education

Amanda Milling was born on 12 March 1975 in Burton upon Trent, England. She went to Moreton Hall School, which is a private school in Shropshire.

After school, she studied economics and statistics at University College London. She graduated from university in 1997. While at university, she joined the Conservative Party.

Career Before Parliament

After finishing her studies, Amanda Milling started working in market research. She joined a company called SW1 Research. In 1999, she moved to another company, Quaestor, where she eventually became a director.

Later, from 2010 to 2014, she worked as the head of clients for Optimisa Research. Her work involved understanding what people thought about different products and services.

Political Journey

Amanda Milling began her political career in local government. In 2009, she was elected as a Conservative councillor for the Helmshore area. This was in Rossendale Borough Council in Lancashire.

Three years later, she became the deputy group leader for the Conservatives on the council. She left her council role in 2014. This was because she was chosen to be the Conservative candidate for the Cannock Chase area in Staffordshire.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In the 2015 general election, Amanda Milling was elected as the MP for Cannock Chase. She won with a majority of 4,923 votes.

After this election, there were some questions about how the Conservative Party reported its campaign spending. The Electoral Commission looked into this. They fined the Conservative Party for not reporting some spending correctly. However, the police decided not to take further action against individual candidates because it wasn't clear if anyone had knowingly acted dishonestly.

Roles in Parliament

During her time as an MP, Amanda Milling served on several important committees. These included the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee. She also worked on committees that looked into specific laws, like the Welfare Reform and Work Bill.

In the 2016 UK EU membership referendum, Amanda Milling supported the UK staying in the European Union. After the referendum, she helped with Boris Johnson's campaign to become the leader of the Conservative Party in 2016.

In the 2017 general election, she was re-elected as MP for Cannock Chase. Her majority increased to 8,391 votes. In January 2018, she became an assistant government whip. This role involves making sure MPs vote in line with their party.

She supported then-Prime Minister Theresa May's plan for the UK to leave the European Union in early 2019.

Cabinet and Government Roles

When Boris Johnson became Prime Minister in July 2019, Amanda Milling was appointed as the Deputy Chief Whip. She also became the Treasurer of the Household. She voted for Johnson's Brexit plan in October 2019.
