Amar Benikhlef (born January 11, 1982) is a famous judoka from Algeria. A judoka is an athlete who practices judo, a Japanese martial art and sport. Amar competed in the middleweight division, which means he was in a specific weight category for judo athletes. He won a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, which is a huge achievement!

About Amar Benikhlef

Amar Benikhlef has also worked as a coach for other judo athletes. In 2021, an athlete he coached, Fethi Nourine, was set to compete in the 2020 Summer Olympics. However, after the competition draw, Nourine and Benikhlef decided that Nourine would not compete.

Rules of Sport and Suspension

The reason for their withdrawal was that Nourine might have had to compete against an Israeli athlete. The International Judo Federation (IJF) has strict rules about keeping sports neutral. This means that political, religious, or racial demonstrations are not allowed at the Olympic Games.

The IJF quickly suspended both Nourine and Benikhlef. They were sent back home to Algeria from Tokyo. The Federation explained that judo is based on respect and friendship. They said they would not allow any discrimination.

The IJF Disciplinary Commission looked into the matter further. In September 2021, Amar Benikhlef was suspended for 10 years, until July 2031. This was because his actions went against the rules of the IJF and the Olympic Charter. These rules are in place to make sure sports competitions are fair and welcoming to everyone.
