The Amaralia hypsiura is a special type of catfish also known as the Carachita. This fish belongs to a group called the Aspredinidae family. You can find A. hypsiura swimming in the waters of the Amazon River basin. This is a huge area in South America where the Amazon River and its many branches flow.

These fish are not very big. They are considered medium-sized for their family. The largest ones grow to about 133 millimeters (which is about 5.2 inches) long. This measurement is taken from the tip of their nose to the base of their tail.

What Makes Amaralia hypsiura Special?

Amaralia hypsiura has some unique features that help it stand out.

Body Shape and Fins

  • Tail Area: This fish has a deep and flat tail area. This part of the body, right before the tail fin, is called the caudal peduncle. Its flat shape helps the fish move through the water.
  • Dorsal Fin: The dorsal fin is the fin on the fish's back. For Amaralia hypsiura, this fin is quite small. It only has about 2 or 3 rays, which are like the bony supports inside the fin.
  • Head Decorations: One of the most interesting things about these fish is their head. They have very noticeable decorations or patterns on their heads. These might be bumps or ridges that make them look unique.

Where Do They Live?

Amaralia hypsiura lives in the Amazon River basin. This huge area includes parts of several countries in South America. The Amazon River is the largest river in the world by the amount of water it carries. It is home to an incredible variety of fish and other animals.

Who Discovered This Fish?

The Amaralia hypsiura was first described by a scientist named Rudolf Kner in 1855. When a scientist "describes" a species, it means they officially name it and write down all its features. This helps other scientists learn about and identify the fish.
