History of Ambrosia
The Ambrosia Creamery began in 1917. It was started by Alfred Morris in his home village of Lifton in Devon. His goal was to create nutritious food for infants. He used milk from local farms, often from the Red Ruby cows. This milk was then dried using special roller dryers.
Ambrosia During Wartime
The British armed forces soon noticed Ambrosia's product. They bought a lot of it for soldiers fighting in the First World War. This helped many soldiers get important nutrients.
Just before the Second World War, Ambrosia made history. It was the first company to sell ready-to-eat creamed rice pudding in a tin. When the war began, most of their products went into Red Cross food parcels. These parcels helped people in need during difficult times.
Growth and New Products
After the wars ended, Ambrosia brought back its popular products. They also introduced a new creamed macaroni pudding. People loved these easy-to-eat desserts.
In 1957, Ambrosia built a new factory. This was because more and more people wanted their products. The new factory was close to the original one in Lifton.
Changes in Ownership
In 1990, a company called Colman's Ltd. bought Ambrosia. Colman's is famous for its mustard. Later, in 2001, Unilever bought Colman's, which included Ambrosia.
Then, in 2004, Unilever sold the Ambrosia brand to Premier Foods. Ambrosia is still a very important brand for Premier Foods today. It sits alongside other well-known brands like Bisto and Oxo.
In 2018, Premier Foods thought about selling the Ambrosia factory and brand. They wanted to focus on other growing brands and reduce their debt. However, they later decided not to sell Ambrosia.

Marketing and Advertising
Ambrosia has used many fun advertisements over the years. These campaigns help people learn about their products.
Early Commercials
In the late 1990s, Ambrosia had commercials for its flavored custards. These ads showed custard splatting onto a man's face. He would then lick it off and say, "Mmmm; strawberry/banana/chocolate flavor." The commercials often ended with music from the cartoon Roobarb.
In 1999, Ambrosia launched "Ambrosia Splat! Custard." This product was made especially for young children. To promote it, they sponsored a popular Saturday-morning kids' TV show called SMTV Live. The show's presenters, Ant and Dec, even narrated the sponsorship ads. Ambrosia also sponsored a pantomime in Dublin in 2002. From 2008 to 2011, they sponsored the CBBC block on BBC One.
From 2000 to 2001, "Ambrosia Splat!" was advertised by animated characters. They were called "The Yummies" and included Chucky Chocolate and Suzie Strawberry. These characters would get "splatted" in funny ways in the ads.
Modern Campaigns
When Ambrosia Rice pots were released in 2012, a new slogan was used. It said, "Devon knows it's unbelievably good." This slogan was similar to their original one.
In 2020, Ambrosia launched a new campaign featuring a mole named Moley. In the advert, Moley comes out of his mole hole and grabs a yellow balloon. The balloon takes him on an adventure over the Devon countryside. He makes new friends and even tries Ambrosia custard at a picnic. Moley loves the creamy taste!
