Park History
Amelia Earhart Park has an interesting past. It used to be part of a big airport area called Naval Air Station Miami. This land was undeveloped for many years.
Amelia Earhart's Connection
The park is named after Amelia Earhart, a famous pilot. In 1937, she began her last flight around the world from a nearby airport. This airport was later renamed Amelia Earhart Field in her honor.
How the Park Was Created
After the Navy stopped using the land, a part of it was given to Miami-Dade County. Community leaders, especially a dairy farmer and developer named Bill Graham, worked hard to make this happen. They wanted to create a large park for everyone to enjoy. So, about half of the southern part of the old air station became Amelia Earhart Park. The park officially opened in 1980.
