Why Amelia Island Was Important
Amelia Island became a busy place for people who smuggled goods. This happened after the Embargo Act of 1807. This law stopped American ships from trading with other countries. Also, the United States ended the slave trade in 1808. These changes made Amelia Island a good spot for illegal trade. Sometimes, as many as 150 ships were in its harbor.
Gregor MacGregor's Arrival
In June 1817, a Scottish adventurer named Gregor MacGregor came to Amelia Island. He called himself a "Brigadier General" for some South American countries. These countries were fighting for their freedom from Spain. MacGregor was a military adventurer who traveled a lot. He claimed to be working for Simón Bolívar, a famous leader.
MacGregor had raised money and gathered soldiers to take over Florida. However, he didn't manage his money well. Many of his soldiers left when they heard about his past actions. Still, he managed to take over the island with a small group. But he left for Nassau in September of that year.
Louis Aury Takes Control
After MacGregor left, his followers were joined by Louis-Michel Aury. Aury was a privateer, which means he was a ship captain who attacked enemy ships with government permission. He had worked with MacGregor before in South America. He was also a leader of a group of buccaneers (sea adventurers) on Galveston Island, Texas.
Once Aury took control of Amelia Island, he set up a new government. He called it the "Supreme Council of the Floridas." He asked his secretaries to write a constitution. He also invited everyone in Florida to join him in fighting against Spanish rule.
For a few months, Aury controlled Amelia Island. During this time, the flag of the revolutionary Republic of Mexico was flown. This was the flag of the Mexican rebels who were still fighting Spain for their independence.
United States Takes Action
The United States had its own plans for Florida. It wanted to add the peninsula to its territory. Because of the smuggling and the actions of MacGregor and Aury, the U.S. decided to act. The United States sent its navy to Amelia Island. On December 23, 1817, the U.S. forces captured the island. This ended the Amelia Island affair.
