American Axle & Manufacturing, Inc. (AAM) is a company based in Detroit, Michigan, USA. It makes important parts for cars, light trucks, and other vehicles. These parts are used in the vehicle's driveline and drivetrain systems, which help power the wheels.
History
AAM started in 1994. A group of investors, led by Richard E. "Dick" Dauch, bought a part of General Motors' business. This part made final drive and forge products.
In 1999, AAM became a public company. This means its shares can be bought and sold on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the symbol "AXL". Since then, AAM has grown a lot. It now supplies many different car makers around the world. They make parts for passenger cars, light trucks, and larger commercial vehicles.
AAM's main office building, called the World Headquarters, was built in 2004. It is located near the border of Detroit and Hamtramck.
2008 Strike
In 2008, AAM experienced a strike involving its workers. This event caused some production delays for car companies like General Motors.
Products
AAM makes many key parts for vehicles. These include axles, drive shafts, front axles, universal joints, and special products for sealing and managing heat.

Changes to Factories
After 2012, American Axle and Manufacturing closed some of its older factories in Detroit. A large project began to take down these old manufacturing buildings. By late 2013, many of them were gone.
In February 2014, it was confirmed that most of the Detroit/Hamtramck factory site had been sold. It was bought by Industrial Realty Group (IRG LLC), a company from California. This company specializes in using industrial buildings for new projects, like apartment complexes.
Even after selling much of the land, American Axle still owns its headquarters building. They also own some greenbelt property at the site. The company plans to build a new engineering facility in the only building left from the original factory complex.
UK Subsidiary
AAM has a company in Glasgow, Scotland, called Albion Automotive. This company is a subsidiary, meaning it is owned by AAM.
