Discovering Amersham's Past
Amersham Museum helps you explore the history of this charming town. It's partly set inside a really old house, built in the 1400s! This special building is even protected as a Grade II listed building. Behind the museum, there's a lovely herb garden where you can see plants that were used long ago.
What You Can See at the Museum
The museum has lots of interesting things to show you. You can see fossils and amazing objects found by archaeologists. These include items from Roman times and the Middle Ages.
The museum also has displays about local crafts. You can learn about how people used to make chairs, create beautiful lace, and weave straw into useful items.
Key Moments in Amersham's History
The exhibits at the museum focus on five important dates that shaped Amersham:
- 1580
- 1775
- 1892
- 1939
- 1964
These dates help tell the story of how the town changed over hundreds of years.
How the Museum Grew
Amersham Museum first opened its doors to visitors in 1991. It started as a small place, but it has grown quite a bit since then!
Expanding the Museum
In 2001, the front part of the museum was made bigger. This was possible thanks to a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which helps protect and celebrate Britain's heritage.
A major expansion happened in 2017. The museum took over the building next door, which used to be a post office. This big change allowed the museum to add many new features:
- A new gallery for introductory exhibitions.
- A space for activities and temporary displays.
- Two new storage areas for their collections.
- An indoor accessible toilet and a lift.
- A modern glass reception area and a gift shop.
New Art Gallery
In March 2024, the museum opened a brand new temporary exhibition space. It's called the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Gallery. Marie-Louise von Motesiczky was an artist from Austria who lived in Amersham during the Second World War. Her Charitable Trust helped fund this exciting new gallery.
