Amiret is a small, unincorporated community located in Lyon County, in the state of Minnesota, United States. An "unincorporated community" is a place where people live together but it doesn't have its own official town government. Instead, it's usually governed by the county or a larger township.
History of Amiret
Amiret has an interesting past with a couple of name changes.
How Amiret Got Its Name
When the community was first started, it was called Saratoga. This name came from a famous place called Saratoga, New York. In 1874, the town was "plat-ted." This means someone drew up a map showing where the streets, lots, and public areas would be.
A few years later, in 1879, the community changed its name to Amiret. This new name was chosen to honor Amiretta Sykes. She was the wife of an important official who worked for the railroad.
The Post Office Story
Amiret also had a post office that changed names. It first opened in 1873 under the name Coburg.
Then, in 1878, the post office's name was changed to Amiret, matching the community's new name. The Amiret post office served the community for many years. It finally closed its doors in 1992.
