Aml Ameen (born 30 July 1985) is a British actor and filmmaker. He is famous for his roles as Trevor in the movie Kidulthood (2006) and Alby in The Maze Runner (2014). He also played Lewis Hardy in the TV show The Bill and Capheus in the first season of the Netflix series Sense8. In 2021, he directed his first movie, a romantic comedy called Boxing Day.

Early Life and First Steps in Acting

Aml Ameen was born in London, England. His parents came from Jamaica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

He went to a special school for acting called the Barbara Speake Stage School. When he was a kid, he performed in famous London shows like Oliver!. When he was 11 years old, he even got to perform on stage with the pop star Michael Jackson at the 1996 BRIT Awards.

Acting Career

First Roles on TV and in Movies

Ameen's first TV role was in 2002 on the police show The Bill. He later joined the show full-time from 2006 to 2007 as the character PC Lewis Hardy. His character was a former street kid who became a police officer to make a positive change.

In 2006, he starred as the main character, Trife, in the popular British movie Kidulthood. He also appeared in other TV shows like EastEnders and Holby City.

In 2008, Ameen started a drama school called the Actors Student Alliance. The school helped find and train new actors in London.

Hollywood and Major Roles

Ameen's career grew, and he began acting in American movies and TV shows. In 2011, he was in the legal drama Harry's Law.

His first big Hollywood movie was Red Tails (2012), a film by George Lucas about African American pilots in World War II. Two years later, he played Alby, the leader of the Gladers, in the science-fiction movie The Maze Runner.

In 2015, Ameen was one of the main actors in the Netflix show Sense8. He played the character Capheus for the first season. Another actor, Toby Onwumere, took over the role for the second season.

In 2018, Ameen starred as a young Jamaican man named "D" in the movie Yardie. The film was directed by the actor Idris Elba.

Directing and Recent Work

In 2021, Ameen directed his first movie, Boxing Day. He also wrote the story and starred in the film as the main character, Melvin. Ameen said he was inspired by his own family and life experiences when writing the movie.

He has continued to act in many projects. In 2023, he played the famous civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in the movie Rustin.

Awards and Recognition

In 2006, The Times newspaper named Ameen as one of its "Ones To Watch". The next year, he won "Best actor in a TV performance" at the Screen Nation Awards for his role in The Bill.
